Web Hosting
To have your own space on the web (your web site) you will need a web host and a domain name. The web host is a server/computer that will hold the files for your web site and make them available for display over the Internet. You need to register a domain name so that people can find the site.
Once the domain name is registered, it will point to your web host. You may have to do some of the work by filling out an online form with your host data.
Web hosts differ according to the following criteria:
- What computer languages they support
- How many email addresses they allow you to register
- How much space you are allowed for file storage
- How many domains you are allowed per account
- Bandwidth usage limit (tread carefully here, because some hosts charge extra once you’ve exceeded the limit)
- DATA BACKUP
- Scope of technical support – email, phone, online chat, ticketing system, forum, …you get the idea the list goes on and on.
Basically, read carefully through what is being offered before signing up. I recommend doing some research by comparing hosts and making a checklist for what you are looking for.
ALSO NOTE!
Some web hosts now offer unlimited space and bandwidth!
Once you have your web space, you can “POST” or “UPLOAD” files to make them accessible through a web browser through a process called FTP.
