Defining Web 2.0

For corporate people, the Web is a platform for business. For marketers, the Web is a platform for communications. For journalists, the Web is a platform for new media. For geeks, the Web is a platform for software development. And so on.
Keywords on Web 2.0
Point of Presence; Web Services; Syndication; decentralization; open; distributed services architecture; API; The Web as Platform; innovation; media and devices; infrastructure; utility/usefulness; simplicity and flexibility; connectivity; web browser.
Keywords don’t match del.icio.us tags
It’s interesting that very few of the keywords were picked out above were used as tags in delicious . The tags used were much more generalised – e.g. web, programming, design.
This indicates to me that people aren’t yet familiar with the term “web 2.0″ and so will stick to general terms when tagging links on this topic. Perhaps this presents an opportunity for me to evangelize Web 2.0.
It could also mean that Web 2.0 is the wrong term to use in my tagline and my posts, because so few people currently use it. But I think it will become more popular over time. I’m betting if people like Tim O’Reilly, John Battelle and Jeff Bezos are using it (as far as I know it was coined by the first two) then it’s going to get adopted by more people in due course. I always like to be in the ‘first mover’ crowd when it comes to the Web
Catch Phrases
Terms:
- API - (wikipedia) An application programming interface (API) is a source code interface that a computer application, operating system or library provides to support requests for services to be made of it by a computer program. An API is similar to an application binary interface (ABI) in that it specifies details of how two independent computer programs can interact, however an API is typically defined at a higher level (i.e., in terms of a programming language that can be compiled when an application is built, rather than an explicit low level description of how data is laid out in memory). For example, the Linux Standard Base is an ABI, while POSIX is an API.The software that provides the functionality described by an API is said to be an implementation of the API. The API itself is abstract, in that it specifies an interface and does not get involved with implementation details.Example: Google created the Google Maps API to facilitate developers integrating Google Maps into their web sites with their own data points. It is a free service. By using the Google Maps API you can embed the full Google Maps on an external web site.
- MASH-UPS - A mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into an integrated experience. The etymology of this term possibly derives from its similar use in pop music. Content used in mashups is typically sourced from a third party via a public interface or API, although some in the community believe that only cases where private interfaces are not used count as mashups. Other methods of sourcing content for mashups include Web feeds(e.g. RSS orAtom), web services and Screen scraping.
- WEB FEEDS - A web feed is a data format used for serving users frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. Making a collection of web feeds accessible in one spot is known as aggregation, which is performed by an Internet aggregator.
- AJAX - a web development technique used for creating interactive web applications. The intent is to make web pages feel more responsive by exchanging small amounts of data with the server behind the scenes, so that the entire web page does not have to be reloaded each time the user requests a change. This is intended to increase the web page’s interactivity, speed, functionality, and usability. The name is shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Ajax is asynchronous in that loading does not interfere with normal page loading. JavaScript is the programming language in which Ajax function calls are made. Data retrieved using the technique is commonly formatted usingXML, as reflected in the naming of the XMLHttpRequest object from which Ajax is derived.
- XML – Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a general-purpose markup language. It is classified as an extensible language because it allows its users to define their own tags. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the sharing of data across different information systems, particularly via the Internet. It is a simplified subset of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML – from which HTML & XHTML originated), and is designed to be relatively human-legible. By adding semantic constraints, application languages can be implemented in XML. These include XHTML, RSS, MathML, GraphML, Scalable Vector Graphics, MusicXML, and thousands of others. Moreover, XML is sometimes used as the specification language for such application languages.
Maybe this will help in defining Web 2.0/

Social Media, Networks, Communities

The web has become a socialsphere where people are communicating with instant messaging, video, audio, and visual resources. Free, of course.
People are becoming dependant on the web for their source of current news, gossip and entertainment through social community websites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc.
Over the last few years we have seen the web open up opportunities to become famous through a cheap YouTube video, ask questions to the next president of the United States, get information behind enemy lines in the ongoing war (a friend of mine updates his facebook page with pics from the base in Khandahar), find out about surivivors of tragedies, or even find your next job. It is more than just fun and games.
Web 2.0 is what has made this advancement possible through the ability to share one’s information easily without writing code or worrying about usability issues.
You may have heard the term social networking / marketing or viral marketing – if you are on Facebook you are part of it. If you are not you are being left behind in the dark.

It is only going to continue to grow.
Here are some of the social networks you should be using:
How Does One Keep Up?!!!
Well you don’t, it’s just too big – just try to stay plugged in by reading a bit every day, watching videos o YouTube and participating. Post updates that are meaningful and people will follow you.
Use sites that report on trends and current topics as a starting point – you can start here.
Summary
Web 2.0 is social, it’s open (or at least it should be), it’s letting go of control over your data, it’s mixing the global with the local. Web 2.0 is about new interfaces – new ways of searching and accessing Web content. And last but not least, Web 2.0 is a platform – and not just for developers to create web applications like Gmail and Flickr. The Web is a platform to build on for educators, media, politics, community, for virtually everyone in fact!
Web 2.0 is all of the above things – don’t let anyone tell you it’s one or the other definition.
Take a look at what the education community is doing with the Web, for example. They are not only starting to use the tools of Web 2.0 – blogs, wikis, podcasts, etc. They’re also adapting to a new generation of kids who are growing up on the Web, the so-called ‘Digital Natives’. The challenge for educators now and for the future is to learn and teach Internet literacy, converse and collaborate with their students using Web tools, and help our children make sense of the huge amounts of information and media that surround us.
Web 2.0 is about the people, when it comes down to it. So it has to be inclusive. The definitions of technologists, social scientists, web designers, philosophers, educators, business people, anybody – they all count.

This video has received almost 71 million views at the time of this posting – the ‘star’ Antoine Dodson has received his own reality show as a result.
