File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
FTP is the process through which files are uploaded onto a server (a concrete computer) and thus made public on the web. It is important to get comfortable with transferring files as it is the last step in making your files available for others to see. If a mistake is made in the uploading process, the end-user (any web “surfer”) will see an error message instead of the targeted page. By using an FTP program (often referred to as the “FTP-Client”) to upload your files, extra and unnecessary data may be stripped from the files making them an even smaller file size for faster downloads. A popular Mac FTP-Client is Fetch, which can be downloaded at versiontracker.com (you can also find other FTP programs for MAC or PC.
